Long before I photographed weddings full time, I was learning how to observe, how to work under pressure, how to collaborate creatively, and how to trust my own eye. Looking back, these jobs didn’t just pay the bills, they quietly shaped the photographer I am today. 35M film developer I worked in a film lab processing film for a year before I went to uni. I learnt about film development and colour, but also patience and precision. I also had a year of looking over the public’s images (not in a strange Robin Williams One Hour Photo way!). I would pack the prints and need to run my eye over the set, making sure there was nothing wrong with them. Over time, this trained my eye to spot tiny details, mistakes, and inconsistencies very quickly. I would also need to talk about the cameras we sold, so I guess this is where my deeper understanding of cameras started, long before I ever thought about photographing weddings. It’s been a bit surreal, to be honest. I’m going to keep this short and just list a few highlights because, quite frankly, if I try to say everything I want to, this post won’t see the light of day until 2026! And finally, at the start of the year, I captured some of the final moments of a beautiful young girl with her family, followed just weeks later by her funeral. I don’t think I’ve fully processed that experience yet. It had a profound effect on me, and I feel deeply honoured to have been trusted to document such meaningful moments for her family. A huge thank you to all my clients and those who’ve trusted me to capture their stories this year. It’s been an honour to document so many incredible moments, and I couldn’t do what I love without you. Here’s to more stories and adventures in the year ahead! If we wake up feeling awful, we can’t just phone in sick. Weddings don’t pause, and there’s no second take. But the truth is, wedding photographers are human. We get sick. And while we don’t often talk about it—maybe because we don’t want to scare our clients or because we feel the pressure to always be reliable—illness is something that can’t always be ignored. I’m not talking about the usual colds and flu. I’m talking about cancer. This blog is a collaboration between myself and Harriet Bird. We are both wedding photographers, parents and we have both had cancer. While my kidney cancer was treated with removal alone, Harriet’s breast cancer required a more intensive, multi-step approach.
